托斯卡纳最年轻的酿酒师,来自Le Macchiole的Eugenio Campolmi在7月14日死于肺癌,享年40岁。

One of Tuscany's best young winemakers, Eugenio Campolmi of the Bolgheri estate of Le Macchiole, died on July 14 after an extended bout with lung cancer. He was 40.

Campolmi was one of a number of wine producers who came to the forefront in Tuscan winemaking in the 1990s, making vibrant and exciting wines. His tiny-production pure Merlot, called Messorio, achieved a cult following among wine collectors around the world, while his blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, named Paleo, was also sought after. (He recently changed the blend of Paleo to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.) In addition, he made an often excellent 100 percent Syrah called Scrio.

The soft-spoken, mellow winemaker always attributed the quality of his wines to his well-manicured vineyards, located next door to the estate of Ornellaia. "The quality of my wines comes from there," he said recently, pointing to the vines behind his family's house. He was always proud that he was born and raised in the region of Bolgheri, where his family ran a small shop, and he wanted to prove that he could make wines as outstanding as his aristocratic neighbors.

Campolmi was a craftsman in his cellar, polishing and refining his reds in new French oak barrels. "I am not interested in having my wines taste oaky," he said. "The new oak is to provide a clean environment to age my wines, whereby the fruit and quality of them are not disturbed by anything else."

Campolmi founded Macchiole in the late 1980s with around 12 acres of vineyards. It now encompasses nearly 50 acres, and a new winery was scheduled to be finished next year.

"Eugenio was a real grapegrower, who got the most out of his vineyards to make excellent wines," said consulting enologist Luca d'Attoma, who had worked with Campolmi since 1989, when they made Paleo together. "He was a simple man who wanted to make a great wine himself, his own way. He was always striving to make better wines."

Camplomi is survived by his wife, Cinzia, 35, and his sons Elia, 13, and Mattia, 9.
